PRF and PRP
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) are injectable treatments derived from your own blood. They concentrate growth factors that support tissue regeneration, collagen production, and skin quality. Used alone or in combination with other treatments, they are a biologics-based approach with no foreign substances.
What PRF and PRP are
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) are both derived from a small sample of your own blood. The sample is centrifuged to separate and concentrate platelets and growth factors from other blood components. PRP is a liquid concentrate; PRF is a slower-released fibrin matrix with a higher platelet and growth factor concentration and no anticoagulants. Both deliver growth factors to the treatment area to support tissue repair, collagen production, and skin quality improvement.
What PRF and PRP can address
Common uses include improving skin texture and tone, reducing fine lines and early laxity, improving under-eye hollowing and skin quality in the periorbital area, supporting scalp health and hair density, and enhancing the results of microneedling or other resurfacing treatments. PRF is also used as a natural volume agent in the under-eye and temples when combined with appropriate technique.
Who may be a candidate
Adults who want a biologically driven approach to skin rejuvenation, prefer treatments derived from their own cells, or are looking to support or extend results from other treatments. Good baseline platelet counts and general health support treatment efficacy. Patients with very low platelet counts or certain blood disorders may not be suitable. Candidacy is confirmed at consultation.
Who should avoid or delay treatment
PRF and PRP are not appropriate for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active infection at the planned treatment site, have significant anemia or thrombocytopenia, are on anticoagulant medications that cannot be paused (discuss with your prescribing physician), have active cancer or are receiving cancer treatment, or have certain blood or immune conditions. Disclose all current medications and health conditions at consultation.
What to expect during a session
A small blood draw (typically 10 to 20 mL) is performed. The sample is centrifuged to prepare the PRF or PRP concentrate. The concentrate is then injected into the treatment area using a fine needle or cannula, or applied topically during microneedling. Sessions typically take 30 to 60 minutes including preparation time. Multiple sessions are usually recommended for optimal results.
Recovery and downtime
Some swelling, redness, and bruising at injection sites is expected and typically resolves within a few days. The under-eye area may swell more noticeably. Avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours, sun exposure for 48 hours, and NSAIDs or blood thinners for several days after treatment unless medically required. Results develop gradually over weeks to months as biological processes take effect.
Risks and side effects
Common: temporary swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at injection and blood draw sites. Less common: temporary lumpiness in the treatment area as the fibrin matrix is absorbed, asymmetry. Rare: infection, skin changes if placed incorrectly. Because PRF and PRP are derived from your own blood, allergic reactions are extremely rare. Results are variable and depend on your individual platelet concentration and biological response.
Alternatives
Alternatives for skin rejuvenation and collagen support include microneedling (often combined with PRF), Sculptra biostimulator, chemical peels, retinoid protocols, and dermal fillers for specific volume concerns. PRF and PRP are frequently used in combination with other treatments rather than as standalone alternatives.
How long results last
Results typically begin to appear four to six weeks after treatment as collagen remodeling progresses, with continued improvement over three to six months. Duration of results varies by individual, treatment area, and number of sessions completed. Most protocols involve two to three initial sessions followed by maintenance treatments. Results vary.
When to contact us
Contact us if you develop increasing pain, swelling, warmth, or discharge at the treatment or blood draw site beyond the expected recovery period. These may indicate infection and should be evaluated promptly. Seek emergency care immediately if you develop any signs of vascular compromise after facial injection.
Clinical notice
Information on this page is educational and does not replace an in-person consultation. Treatments are recommended only after reviewing medical history, anatomy, goals, and clinical suitability. Results vary. Appropriate candidates are determined at the time of consultation.
If you experience severe swelling, vision changes, difficulty breathing, signs of vascular compromise, or another urgent symptom after treatment, seek emergency care immediately.
