PDRN Therapy
PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) therapy uses purified DNA fragments derived from salmon to support skin repair and skin quality. It is delivered by injection into the superficial dermis and is used in some aesthetic protocols for skin quality improvement, scar healing support, and post-procedure recovery. Evidence and regulatory status vary by product and country. PDRN is not a substitute for medical treatment of inflammatory skin disease.
What PDRN therapy is
PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) consists of purified short-chain DNA fragments derived from salmon. It is used in some aesthetic protocols to support skin repair and skin quality. Research suggests PDRN may interact with adenosine receptors to support tissue repair processes and growth factor activity involved in wound healing and collagen synthesis — however, evidence and regulatory status vary by product and country. PDRN is a biologically active molecule and is not a filler; it does not add volume to the skin. It is not a treatment for inflammatory skin disease and should not replace care from a dermatologist or physician for medical skin conditions.
What PDRN can address
PDRN therapy is used to improve skin texture and hydration, reduce chronic redness and inflammation, support healing after procedures such as laser, chemical peels, or microneedling, assist in acne scar remodeling, improve the appearance of sensitive or reactive skin, and support overall skin quality and repair capacity. It is used both as a standalone treatment and as a post-procedure adjunct.
Who may be a candidate
Adults with concerns about skin texture, chronic skin inflammation or redness, post-procedure healing support needs, acne scarring, or overall skin quality. PDRN is particularly well-suited to patients with sensitive or reactive skin who are not appropriate candidates for more aggressive resurfacing. Candidacy is determined at consultation.
Who should avoid or delay treatment
PDRN therapy is not appropriate for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a known allergy to salmon or fish products (PDRN is salmon-derived — discuss allergy history at consultation), have active skin infection or inflammation in the planned treatment area, or have certain systemic conditions. Disclose all medications and health conditions at consultation.
What to expect during a session
After consultation and consent, the skin is cleansed and topical numbing may be applied. PDRN solution is injected into the superficial dermis using a fine needle, typically in a series of small injection points across the treatment area. Sessions take 20 to 40 minutes. Some patients experience mild stinging during injection that resolves quickly. A course of four to six sessions spaced one to two weeks apart is commonly recommended for initial results, followed by monthly maintenance.
Recovery and downtime
Minor redness, small injection marks, and occasional swelling at the treatment sites are expected and typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours. Avoid vigorous exercise and sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. SPF 30 or higher should be used daily throughout treatment and recovery. PDRN has a favorable tolerability profile and is often used specifically because it is suitable for sensitive skin types with minimal recovery time.
Risks and side effects
Common: minor redness, bruising, and tenderness at injection sites. Less common: temporary swelling or lumpiness that resolves as the product integrates with the tissue. Rare: allergic reaction, particularly in patients with fish or salmon allergy — this must be disclosed before treatment. PDRN does not carry the same nodule risk as biostimulators or fillers, and vascular complications are extremely rare at the superficial delivery depths used.
Alternatives
Alternatives for skin quality, texture, and regenerative support include PRF/PRP treatments, microneedling, Sculptra biostimulator, medical-grade retinoid protocols, and growth factor topicals. PDRN is frequently used in combination with microneedling or as a post-procedure recovery support rather than as an either/or alternative.
How long results last
Results from PDRN therapy develop over several weeks as tissue regeneration progresses. A full course of initial sessions typically shows results by four to eight weeks after the final session. Duration varies based on individual healing response, the concern being addressed, and home skincare adherence. Maintenance sessions every one to three months are commonly recommended to sustain improvement. Results vary.
When to contact us
Contact us if you develop unexpected swelling, increasing redness, signs of infection, or a reaction that concerns you after treatment. If you have any history of fish or salmon allergy and did not disclose this at consultation, contact us before your next session. Seek emergency care immediately if you develop signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Clinical notice
Information on this page is educational and does not replace an in-person consultation. Treatments are recommended only after reviewing medical history, anatomy, goals, and clinical suitability. Results vary. Appropriate candidates are determined at the time of consultation.
If you experience severe swelling, vision changes, difficulty breathing, signs of vascular compromise, or another urgent symptom after treatment, seek emergency care immediately.
